Chapter 1 · §1.1

Meet Statistics: Describe It or Infer It.

A playful tour of Daniel's opening terminology: the two divisions of statistics, populations vs. samples, and the vocabulary you'll need for nonparametric methods.

The Two Primary Divisions

Division 1

Descriptive Statistics

Organize and summarize the data you have. Build a frequency distribution — tap a bar's + or − to add or remove observations.

Division 2

Inferential Statistics

Use a sample to draw conclusions about the larger population. Cross the bridge to see the inference.

Mystery Population Jar

One jar, many different x̄'s

The jar holds N = 100 dots. The parameter μ = 50.0 is fixed; every sample gives a different statistic x̄.

true μ = 50.0 · N = 100
